In a landmark 5-4 opinion, the United States of America Supreme Court ruled on Friday, June 26, 2015, that states cannot ban same-sex marriage. The US Supreme Court rules gay marriage is legal everywhere in the U.S.A.
It is unclear how soon marriage licenses will be issued in states where gay unions were previously prohibited.
Before the ruling, gay couples could marry in 37 states in addition to Washington DC. New York State is one of those states where same-sex couples could marry.

En una votación de 5-4, el Tribunal Supremo de los Estados Unidos de América dictaminó el viernes, 26 de junio de 2015 que los Estados no pueden prohibir el matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo. La Corte Suprema de Estados Unidos ha dictaminado que el matrimonio gay es legal en todas partes en los EE.UU.
No está claro qué tan pronto se emitirán licencias de matrimonio en los estados donde las uniones homosexuales eran prohibidos previamente.
Antes de la sentencia, las parejas homosexuales podian casarse en 37 estados y en Washington DC. El Estado de Nueva York es uno de esos estados donde las parejas del mismo sexo se pueden casar desde el 2011.
